Tourism Tax
Establishment
In 2002, the residents of Festus voted in favor of implementing a Hotel/Motel sales tax of 2% in order to promote the improvement of recreational facilities available to tourists in Festus. This tax is to be paid to the City Finance Office quarterly and filed with reports including gross daily rental receipts for each 3 month period. Voters in 2012 increased the tourism tax to the state maximum 5% and approved using those extra funds to be used for promotional materials and events.
Tourism Commission
The Festus Tourism Commission consists of 5 members appointed by the City Council of Festus. One member is a representative of the hotel and motel industry, two are to be active in the tourism industry, and the other two members are to be members of local general business interests in the City of Festus. The members are appointed for 3 year terms which are staggered and serve no more than two consecutive terms. There is no compensation for serving on Festus Tourism Commission.
Revenue
The revenue raised from the Festus Tourism Tax is deposited into a special trust fund only to be used for purpose of promoting tourism. The Commission administers the moneys within the limits of the budget approved by the City of Festus.
